The 5th graders studied bridge designs, then used toothpicks and glue to build their own bridges.  Their strongest bridges held 19 lbs!  See a Photo Gallery of the bridge breaking competition and a Video of the bridges being destroyed in the name of science!

Congratulations to SGS faculty & staff who received awards on Nov. 26.  Qingqing Ji (Chinese) received the Harvey Clarke Award and Jamie Billings (Spanish) the Fred Gilbert Award , both for teaching excellence.  School counselor Meghan Kilgore  received the Jim Stecher Award and was recognized as outstanding staff member.  Plus, MS science teacher Brian Hutchinson will travel to Alaska next summer to study receding glaciers with the Hannah Joss Fellowship Award!

The 2nd graders made colorful owl glasses and read poems about owls at the Nov. 22 Lower School Assembly.  See a Photo Gallery of them performing for the rest of the Lower School.

The Pilgrim's Progress chess tournament at Saint George's on Saturday, Nov. 23 had 37 competitors from as far away as Pullman, including eight players from SGS.  Saint George's won the team trophy.  Winning individual trophies were Noah Hochheimer (4.0), second in Knights section (tied for first, but lost to the player he tied with); Oliver Ling (4.0), second in Bishop's section; Eshan Reddy (3.5), top in grade 4; and Jonah Hurst (3.0), top high school player.  Donovan Bradford (3.5) had the same score as Eshan, and thus tied for top in 4th grade. Eshan won the sole award since he played in the top section, and so presumably had tougher competition, said coach James Stripes. 

Tuesday, November 26 features a variety of activities at SGS.  The Lower School's Science Day has the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders presenting their science projects or research.  See the 3rd Grade from 8:30-9:30am and 12:40-1:20pm; the 4th Grade from 9:10-9:50am, 12:40-1:40pm; and the 5th Grade from 8:30-9:50am, 1:20-1:40pm.  At 10:40am, Radical Rick from Extreme Science will present his exciting show on air and chemical reactions.

In the afternoon at 2:30 in Founders Theater, the faculty and staff awards will be presented, including the Hannah Joss Award that funds a professional development trip anywhere in the world.

Then at 6:30pm in the US Courtyard, the Upper School students will dress up for Casino Night ($5 admission) and gamble the evening away.

Saint George's is closed Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Friday, Nov. 29 for Thanksgiving Break.

The Spokane National College Fair will be held at the Spokane Convention Center on Tuesday, November 5 from 9am to Noon and in the evening from 6 to 8pm.  Students are encouraged to attend to learn about various colleges and to speak with admission representatives for schools of interest.  For more information about the fair, including a list of colleges attending, Click Here.

The 9th grade class will visit the fair that morning, but college counselor Kerry Clark encourages all students to attend in the evening after school from 6-8pm.  If you plan to attend, please register through the above link and print out the barcode you generate through your registration so it is easier for you to share your information with any colleges you speak with.  Also, for schools that track demonstrated interest, this is a great way to show you have made contact with a school’s representative.  The person at the booth for each school is often the person who reads applications for our area, so try to be prepared with some questions to ask to make the most of your time and make a good impression with admission representatives.

SGS parent Marcelo Morales spent the morning of Nov. 14 sharing the culture of his native Chile with the Upper School Spanish classes.  They learned about Chile's cuisine (seafood), politics (boisterous), and other aspects of this unique South American nation.  See a Photo Gallery of him speaking to the class and some of the questions they had written down on their desks for him to answer.

Saint George's School will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans' Day.  Be sure to honor the veterans in your life for their service.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

The 11th grade IB Biology class used the Bio Lab microscopes to identify and draw amoeba and other tiny organisms.  See a Photo Gallery of them finding and recording these remarkable creatures!

The 9th graders split into two groups and toured Whitworth University on Nov. 5 to learn more about college life.  Quincy Cooper, one of their guides, was familiar with SGS, having worked as an intern in our Communications Office back in the fall of 2014.  See a Photo Gallery of both groups exploring the nearby campus.
