AN IB WORLD SCHOOL

Academic News

Sixth-grade teacher Brad Kirsch has always wanted to time travel, like Marty McFly in the 1985 movie "Back to the Future".  This next summer he'll get a chance to visit a country that's stuck in the 1950s -- Cuba -- thanks to the Hannah Joss Fellowship.  The annual award, named for an early SGS history teacher, pays for a teacher to travel anywhere in the world and bring their discoveries back to their classroom.

"The goal of my 6th grade World Cultures class is to expose students to cultures outside of their own," says Brad, "breaking through the walls of this school, this city, and this country to the lifestyles and cultural
norms of other groups of people.  Ninety miles from Florida is a country vastly different than our own, stuck in time and thriving none-the-less."  This trip will allow him to give his students a first-hand account of a culture different than our own, then tracking the changes that happen in the coming years when the U.S. embargo comes down.

Other faculty and staff awards announced at the Nov. 19 assembly included Upper School Assistant Paige Halliburton for the Jim Stetcher Staff Excellence Award, Middle School English teacher Sarah Berentson for the Harvey W. Clarke Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Upper School math teacher Rachel Hildie for the Fred Gilbert Distinguished Teaching Award.  See a Photo Gallery of all the honorees!

A recent six-minute video segment on the PBS News Hour does a good job of describing all aspects of the International Baccalaureate program.  See the IB Video on global education, and check with Elizabeth Tender about any questions or ideas about the IB curriculum at SGS.

Saint George's School has won the WIAA Scholastic Cup for the top 2B school in the state for academic and athletic performance!  SGS racked up 1,585 points, including earning four state academic titles (choir, debate, boys soccer, and boys tennis) for highest grade point average.  The school also earned points for top athletic teams, including the boys soccer, girls soccer, girls track, and boys basketball teams that all finished 2nd in State.  See the Rankings of 2B Schools and the List of SGS Programs that earned points toward the title.

The WIAA Scholastic Cup recognizes performance in the classroom as well as on the playing surface.  Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance.  SGS had finished 2nd to Northwest Christian the past two years, finally passing the Crusader's 1,405 points to claim the title this year.  League rivals Colfax (865 points) and Davenport (830 points) finished 3rd and 4th overall, highlighting the athletic and academic strength of Eastern Washington's small schools.

This marks the second time that Saint George's has won the Scholastic Cup, while finishing 2nd seven times and in the Top 5 statewide 13 times.  One measure of Saint George's academic strength was that SGS was the only school in 2017-18 to win the Scholastic Cup without winning an athletic State Championship.  Go Dragons!

Saint George's School won 1st place in the team competition at the Kings Clash chess tournament on Saturday, Nov. 3.  The team was led by three players scoring 4.0 out of 5.0 possible.  Two of them, Adrian Rooney and Eshan Reddy, were part of a three way tie for 1st in the K-6 section.  "Adrian finished in 2nd overall on tiebreaks, while Eshan won the trophy for top third grader," said SGS coach James Stripes.  "Adrian finished the tournament without any losses; he drew his first two games and then won the rest."  Noah Hochheimer also scored 4.0 and finished in 3rd overall in the K-4 section, taking home the trophy for top second grader.

Saint George's had two players who scored 3.0, Joey Maestas and Donovan Bradford, with one of them counted towards the team score of 15.0 for the top four players.  The tournament, hosted at Saint George's, attracted 60 players from the Spokane area and northern Idaho.  See a Photo Gallery of the competition in Metters Gym.
