AN IB WORLD SCHOOL

Arts News

In April, the 7th graders brainstormed types of art that could adorn the Story Trail, then led other Middle School students in creating wind chimes made of recycled keys, painted birdhouses, inspirational signs, and clay totem poles.  Their artwork was placed along the Story Trail for summer viewing.  Thanks to Jennifer Smith and Jim Tuck for inspiring and directing this campus beautification project!  See photo galleries of the Middle Schoolers Creating the art and the Decorated Story Trail.

On the Saint George's Story Trail during July, you can read the classic tale of "Miss Rumphius" by Caldicott Award-winner Barbara Cooney.  The story is about Alice Rumphius, known as the Lupine Lady for scattering lupine seeds that now bloom along the coast of Maine each year.

The Story Trail begins just inside the school's front gates and winds up the hillside through bushes and trees before descending to the Davenport House.  The trail is open weekdays from dawn until dusk, and occasionally on weekends when there is an event on campus.  Visitors are welcome to hike the trail anytime the gates are open.  Keep up on future books through the SGS Story Trail Facebook Page.

The May Term Dance class performed a Bollywood-style Indian dance at the June 5 conclusion of May Term.  They also showcased their dance skills with a Hip Hop number to District 78's "Shake, Move, Wiggle", an Original Choreography dance to "Crossfire" by Stephen, and a James Bond number to that famous movie theme.  Great job, Dance class!

Portraits of orphans from Haiti were created by five SGS art students this winter and delivered to the youth in Haiti this spring.  The children were living in very marginalized conditions - both before and after last year's hurricane - so to receive portraits made just for them was truly a unique experience for all.  See photo galleries of the SGS Student Artists at work, the Orphan Portraits displayed in the Art Gallery this spring, and a Video of the Orphans Receiving their Portraits (from SGS and 3,000 other student artists) and sharing their collective joy and excitement!

The 7th graders created paintings where their painted hands disappear into the background patterns.  See a Photo Gallery of these "camouflage hands" and learn about the Chinese artist who inspired this artform.

The 8th grade art students created scratchboard art inspired by the work of Gustav Klimt, the grammar of ornamentation, and Zentangles.  See a Photo Gallery of their unique designs that are up on the wall near the Dragon Room...

10th grader Sarah Wu earned two gold medals (Contemporary and Duet) and two silver medals (Beethoven Sanata and Romantic) in the Musicfest Northwest piano competitions.  She even received the Contemporary category's Adjudicator's Choice Award, which is only given to one high school participant per category (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary) and includes a $250 prize.

Sarah was featured on KPBX Spokane Public Radio on Friday morning, May 18, playing her duet piece Fantasie in F minor D. 940 by Franz Schubert.  Then watch a Video of Sarah Performing her winning Contemporary piece (Five Etudes de Jazz I.Charleston II.Blues V.Toccata sur le Shimm by Erwin Schulhoff) at the Festival Highlights Concert that Friday evening at the Fox Theater with the other winners in piano, violin, voice, ballet, etc.  Congratulations, Sarah
