The 2nd graders drew owls to perch in these paper birch trees in the Arts Building.  This was part of their focus on learning about owls this fall.  See a Photo Gallery of the variety of owls that have landed on those trees!

The SGS 6th graders serenaded different Lower School classes with socially-distant performances of "Jingle Bells" on Dec. 9.  View a 2-minute Video Compilation of their performances on the SGS YouTube Channel.  Thanks to Michelle Bledsoe for filming their performances.  Happy Holidays!

7th and 8th grade Middle School students created alternating black and white insect body parts on a geometric background.  They also used programs to design a mandala-like geometric pattern and then hand-colored them in.  See photo galleries of their Black & White Insects and their Colorful Mandalas.

David Demand and the 6th grade practiced playing the bells during music class in Founders Theater last week.  See a Photo Gallery of them making music, and then wiping down their music stands before the next class.

Everlasting Envelopes, an SGS student-run project to provide cards and letters to local senior citizens who are missing friendly contact, organized Upper School students to create welcome cards and letters before Thanksgiving.  The 70 cards and letters were delivered to shut-in residents at Royal Park Retirement Center.  See a Photo Gallery of the students creating positive messages to share with elderly shut-ins.

The ceramic wave installation that Jennifer Davenport's class made last year was chosen as a winner in the 2020 Ocean Awareness Contest.  Their artwork won the Making Waves Award in the 2020 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest Art Category.  "The Making Waves Award recognizes young environmental leaders who creatively raised awareness for ocean conservation and climate action in their communities," says Linda Cabot, founder and president of Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs.  "Your impressive submission stood out from the more than 5,300 entries we received from around the world."

The Making Waves Award brings with it a $500 total cash scholarship, which amounts to $62.50 going to each of the students who helped create the installation: Norma Broderick, Krystal Huang, Angelina Jiang, Anna Klim, Sonja Klim, Fair Niven, Pearl Wenzel, and Selina Yang.

“Our installation was made up of a bunch of unique waves with different colors, curves, and shapes; each individual shape coming together to create a larger picture,” says Jennifer.  When the installation was displayed in the SGS Art Gallery in early 2020, students, faculty, and parents were invited to take small pieces (rain-drop shaped ceramic pushpins) of the installation home to share the art and its message with their family, friends, and the larger community.

“We wanted our installation to remind people of how beautiful the ocean is, how important it is to the world, the very real possibility we could lose it, and the necessity of taking action to save it.”

Creating Cards That Reach Out

November 23, 2020

Everlasting Envelopes, an SGS student-run project to provide cards and letters to local senior citizens who are missing friendly contact, organized Upper School students to create welcome cards and letters before Thanksgiving.  The cards are going to shut-in residents at local senior homes.  See a Photo Gallery of the students creating positive messages to share with elderly shut-ins.

Earlier this fall while learning at home, 7th and 8th grade art students went outside to find all the letters of the alphabet in nature (or created with nature if they couldn’t find them).  They created a poster then spelled out a word using their alphabets.  See a Photo Gallery of their alphabets and see if you can read their words.

SGS 5th grader Sophie Field used aluminum foil to create a rubbed relief of a leaf for art class.  After uploading it to the Artsonia website for student artwork, Sophie's work was one of 12 pieces selected worldwide for the best 4-6 grade Artist of the Week!  "We've used Artsonia for 3 or 4 years now, and this is the first time we've ever had a student chosen as a finalist," says art teacher Jennifer Davenport.  "I'm really proud that she made it to 2nd!"

The 3rd graders carved pumpkins in class just before Halloween.  See a Photo Gallery of them creating all kinds of faces and designs.  Plus, enjoy a few lighted Jack O'Lanterns, created by SGS students and staff, to help you remember Halloween.
