AN IB WORLD SCHOOL

Community News

For the 7th year, SGS students have put together bright red and green shoeboxes filled with toiletries and treats for children in war-torn or impoverished parts of the world.  This year 66 "Operation Christmas Child" boxes will be shipped off to children in Third World countries, war zones, and natural disaster areas.  Thanks to the Sande Family for organizing this service that makes a real difference for children around the world!

Middle and Upper school staff and students wore their ugly Holiday sweaters in class or while eating lunch a few days before Thanksgiving.  See a Photo Gallery of a variety of brightly colored sweaters!

This fall's SGS Parent Annual Fund Drive will support the students, teachers, staff and coaches who are SUPERHEROES for the amazing efforts they make each day!  Saint George's faculty, in particular, have worked harder than ever to bring subjects to life in the classroom -- both in-person and remotely -- while supporting the health, safety and emotional well-being of our students.

The 6th grade parents are already at 29% participation.  Thank you!  If your employer matches gifts to nonprofits, then contact Ashley Miller for how to double your donation.  And did you know that your gift to SGS for #GivingTuesday also will count toward the Annual Fund?  Learn more about #GT in This Article.

> Make a Donation in honor of our student, teacher, staff and coaching SUPERHEROES!

Annual Fund Kick Off Photos

November 23, 2020

The Parent Annual Fund kicked off on Nov. 18 with bright AF banners, the Class Participation sign, and Lower School students holding signs reminding how donations support them and their teachers.  See a Photo Gallery here.

The SGS annual 2nd Harvest Food Drive continues through Friday the 20th.  This year grades 6-12 each have their own donation boxes with a competition between grades.  The Lower School will be collecting as one unit, so LS families can drop off donations just inside the doors of ESAC as you drive up for morning student drop off.  Everyone else can bring donations into the MS and US boxes in the courtyards.  All food donated will go directly to families in Spokane that are unable to afford food.  In Spokane alone, 1 in 8 people including 1 in 5 children are food insecure.  Saint George’s food drive is the biggest donation that 2nd Harvest gets from any organization!  For families that are choosing to social distance, you can always donate directly to 2nd Harvest at: https://2-harvest.org.  Every $1 donated equals 5 meals.

Things that can be donated include any canned goods as well as packaged nonperishable food items.  Things that are most needed include:
- Canned Fish, and Lean Meats
- Healthy soups and Stews
- Dry or Canned Beans
- Whole Grain Pastas, Rice, and Cereal
- Canned fruits and Veggies
- Peanut Butter and other Nut Butters

Wednesday, Nov. 18 marks the start of the Fall SGS Parent Annual Fund Drive.  In this challenging year, we are raising donations to support the students, teachers, staff and coaches who are SUPERHEROES for the amazing efforts they make each day!  Saint George's faculty, in particular, have worked harder than ever to bring subjects to life in the classroom -- both in-person and remotely -- while supporting the health, safety and emotional well-being of our students.  And of course, masks and SUPERHEROES go together!

The 8th graders spent their Theme Day on Oct. 28 learning about local nonprofits that aid refugees.  Here is a Photo Gallery of the speakers from Feast World Kitchen, Global Neighborhood Thrift, Refugee Connections, and SGS parent Jayne McLaughlin representing Refugee Bath Company.

Saint George's Fall Blood Drive on Nov. 6 raised 25 donations and collected 31 units of blood.  Thank you to everyone who supported this vital service for local patients in need!

The Lower School assembled outside for a flag-waving celebration of Veterans' Day on Nov. 11, 2020.  Here's a Photo Gallery and a Quick Video of that event, along with a heartfelt "Thank You" to all members of the SGS community who have served their country.

Each year the Lower School posts a “Hall of Honor” for Veterans’ Day in the hallway.  It highlights veterans that are family members of LS students or faculty with a photo and information about the veteran.  This year, we will post the “Hall of Honor” on PowerSchool Learning instead so everyone can view it from Monday, Nov. 9 through Nov. 13.  Go to Kathy’s & LS News PSL Page and click on Veterans’ Hall of Honor on the left sidebar to view the slideshow.
