Parent Drive Enters 3rd Week

October 21, 2019

Today starts the third week of our five-week Parent Annual Fund Drive.  Thank you to all the parents that have donated so far; it's easy to donate at sgs.org/give!  We have a goal of 90% parent participation and as of today we are at 37% parent participation.  Let's push to reach our goal and #Powerthedragon.  Go Dragons!

Students who didn't get their photo taken in September or want a retake can do so on Thursday, Oct. 24.  Just print out and fill out the Photo Order Form and bring it to the photographers between 10:30am and Noon out on Graduation Lawn under the trees.

The new SGS Center for Family Engagement's October focus is on "Mindfulness" and the ways that students and their families can be aware of what's going on around them, present to the people they are with, and able to focus on one thing at a time.  School counselor Meghan Kilgore has some helpful tips and book suggestions for different ages on Her PowerSchool Page

School counselor Meghan Kilgore will be hosting a Book Club for parents as part of the new Center for Family Engagement.  She has chosen four books and plans to meet four times this year for discussion and snacks.  Parents will be reading the following books:
> Parenting with Love and Logic by Foster Cline (meeting on November 14, 2019),
> How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber (January 30, 2020),
> The Whole Brain Child by Dan Siegel (March 26, 2020), and
> The Stressed Years of Their Lives by Dr. Janet Hibbs (May 28, 2020).

Please email her at meghan.kilgore@sgs.org if you are interested in joining the book club – even just for one book!  She plans to meet in the evenings, but will send out more information once a group is developed.  Find More Information Here about the four books and links to purchase them.

Saint George's is excited to announce our new Center for Family Engagement, a resource center for SGS students and parents directed by Meghan Kilgore, our school counselor.  She has created a PowerSchool Learning page where you can find more information on upcoming events, book clubs, and other ways to connect with one another.  Find More Information Here or contact Meghan to learn more about the Center for Family Engagement.

After grades 8-11 take the PSAT on Wednesday, Oct. 14, all Middle and Upper School students will gather for an Oktoberfest lunch.  Each grade's Parent Association Ambassador has communicated what students should bring for food assignments that day.

Then after lunch a series of rotating activities will include writing thank you letters to active duty soldiers, mindfulness and yoga activities, gratitude photo-journalism, reading to Lower School students, playing capture the flag, and creating kindness rocks.  It will be a fun way to connect with students in different grades and build up the SGS community.  Students should dress in comfortable clothes and be prepared to run around outside (even in the rain).

We are into the second week of our 5 week Parent Drive and we are pushing to get 90% parent participation for the many student activities that it helps fund.  Congratulations to the 2nd grade class that is already at 33%.  And thank you to all the parents that have already donated; it's easy to donate at sgs.org/give!  Let's #Powerthedragon

The new SGS Center for Family Engagement will have a theme for each month this year.  October's focus is "Mindfulness" and the ways that students and their families can be aware of what's going on around them, present to the people they are with, and able to focus on one thing at a time.  School counselor Meghan Kilgore has some helpful tips and book suggestions for different ages.  Plus, each month a parent guest writer will share their thoughts on the topic of the month.  This month Julie Reichel writes about how her family and Saint George's classrooms try to reduce stress and encourage kindness.  If you would like to be a parent guest writer, please email meghan.kilgore@sgs.org.

The SGS Annual Fund's 5-Week Parent Drive started Monday, October 7 with students waving signs at morning drop off about the SGS programs that the Annual Fund supports.  See a Photo Gallery of them and their signs.

Last year parent participation increased from 75% to 84% and four classes reached 100% parent participation!  This year we are hoping to see 90% of parents support the Annual Fund and the many student activities that it helps fund.  Keep an eye on the Parent Participation Sign by the bridge just past the Middle School for weekly updates on giving.  Our Annual Fund goal is $210,000 and we need your support!  To learn more about the Annual Fund, please head to our FAQ Page or contact Ashley Miller at ashley.miller@sgs.org.  Together we can #Powerthedragon.

The "Power the Dragon" Parent Drive will begin on Monday, October 7 and run until November 8.  This year we will have a student-led phonathon that will take place October 8th & 9th.  We would love to see as many early donations as possible.  This year our students have 351 parents to call so if you make a donation by October 8th then you will not receive a call and our students will be so grateful!  Together let's Power The Dragon and hit our goal of $210,000 and 90% parent participation.

If you want to support the Annual Fund drive, just click on Give Now under the website's Support SGS tab.  Go Dragons!
