Saint George's 8th grade Math Counts team earned 13th place at the State Competition, held at the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA on Saturday, March 10. The team of Stella Brown, Kara Chiang, Tariq Ravasia, and Ethan Wu were the top scoring school from all of Eastern Washington. The competition featured the top 25 teams and about 140 math students from across the state. In individual awards, Kara was 36th overall and Tariq was 43rd overall. "These are solid scores considering the state of Washington usually is one of the stronger states in the country when competing at the national level," says their coach Shane Kangas. Congratulations Dragons!
The MS Academic Fair on March 13 was overflowing with interesting experiments and projects. The 8th graders filled the Dragon Room with their science and history projects, while the 6th and 7th graders displayed and explained their science experiments in the MS Courtyard. Nearly half of the Middle School competed in the annual Pi Day contest to recite the most digits of Pi on March 14th (3.14). The top scores by grade were 6th grader Henri Osborne with 54 digits, 7th grader Yasmine Tehrani with 20 digits, and 8th grader Tariq Ravasia with 74 digits. The 7th and 8th grade choir sang three jazz classics at their Spring Concert on Tuesday, March 13. See a video of them singing "Fly Me to the Moon" and a Photo Gallery of their performance. They were followed by the 6th grade choir; see a Photo Gallery of them on stage. They performed a variety of songs, from a Gaelic tune to a Baroque chorus to their own take on the children's song "This Ol' Man". Very entertaining!
The Jan. 26 Math is Cool Regional Competition had some confusion over the results, says coach Shane Kangas, but Saint George's will send two Middle School teams to State. The 6th grade team captured 1st Place in their division and earned the highest score in the entire Spokane competition! The 8th grade team finished 2nd overall and also is headed to State. The Coding and Maker Club is open to students in grades 3-8 who are interested in learning how to program video games, use a vinyl cutter to make stickers, and create digital compositing with a green screen.
