Werkman Named WIAA Player of the Week

April 22, 2019

Senior Xander Werkman had a productive pair of baseball games on April 10 and 11.  The first game he struck out 16 in a no-hitter, while going 2 for 5 at the plate with a triple and five runs scored against Liberty.  He added four more hits the next day, including a double and three RBIs against Riverside.  And for that he was named the WIAA 2B State Baseball Player of the Week.

"For the season, Werkman is hitting .737 (28 for 38) with 11 doubles, a homer and 16 RBIs," according to an extended article about him in the April 18 Spokesman-Review.  "He has a 2.42 earned-run average with 32 strikeouts in five games pitched."  The article also quotes SGS baseball coach Mark Rickard about having Xander on the team.  "It's a blessing to have a guy who is motivated and obvously a great athlete.  A great talent, but also a guy who is of great character, a good team leader.  So to me, just all around he represents us at our best."  Read the Full Article to find out where Xander will be playing next year in college.  (Hint: It's about as far away as he can go and still be in the U.S.)
