Boys Golf Team Wins 1st District Title

May 20, 2019

Saint George's boys won their first District 7 golf title in school history on May 13, edging out Colfax by 2 points. That ended a streak of four straight district titles for the Colfax boys.  Michael McCarthy shot an even par 72, hitting all 18 greens in regulation to finish tied for 3rd overall for the District Tournament.  His brother, Patrick, captured the 11th and final spot at the state tournament, making par on #18 at Meadowwood to beat a Lind Ritzville player by 1 shot.  These two will represent SGS this week at the State Tournament in Tumwater.

Beyond the McCarthy brothers, all five players contributed to the team victory.  "Winston Poppell made a big push on day 2 to finish 14th, Hunter Johnson hung in there after a rocky start to finish 15th, and Caleb Flegel played consistently throughout to finish 17th," said coach Brad Kirsch.  "If any of these three had slid more than two spots in the final standings, we wouldn’t have beat Colfax.  Power in numbers and they came through!"

On the girls’ side, Liv Senske also qualified for the State Tournament, shooting a 98 -- the first time she had broken 100 in a tournament setting.  She finished 10th overall to earn her first trip to State!  See a Photo Gallery of the Dragon golfers at the District tournament.
