"Signing Day" for Ward & Higashi on Tuesday, April 18

April 17, 2017

Two SGS senior athletes, Madison Ward and Hailey Higashi, will sign letters of intent with universities at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 in the Upper School’s Dragon Room.

Madison Ward competes in both cross country and track for SGS.  She has finished 2nd in the 1B/2B State Cross Country Tournament three times, as well as winning the State Title her junior year.  She also holds the 2B State Title in the 800 meter and 1600 meter distances.

“Madie has overcome a lot to reach the point she has,” said SGS Cross Country Coach, Josh Hayes.  She had foot surgery after her freshman year and suffered a stress fracture at the State 2B Track and Field championships her sophomore year, both requiring significant rehabilitation time.  “She’s poured in more work than any athlete I’ve ever coached,” said Hayes, who described Madison as “dedicated, determined and focused.”

Madison has been offered a Division I athletic scholarship with the University of Montana.  She will be signing a letter of intent to run cross country and track with the Grizzlies.

Hailey Higashi competes on the Dragon girls’ basketball team.  With 1785 career points, she is the 2nd all-time leading scorer in SGS history.  She is a four-time 1st Team League and 1st Team All-State honoree, leading her team three times to the 2B State Tournament and earning 3rd and 6th place trophies.

“Hailey started out as a prolific scorer then showed she could be great at both ends of the floor,” said SGS girls’ basketball coach Mark Rickard, who described her as “driven, resilient, and passionate.  As an upper classman, she proved she could be a leader who was committed to making the people around her better.  It was a great honor to coach this young lady!”

Hailey has been offered a Division II athletic scholarship with Hawaii Pacific University.  She will be signing a letter of intent to play women’s basketball with the Sharks.
