March 09, 2020

The SGS boys' basketball team earned the 3rd place trophy at the State 2B Tournament with a decisive 80-52 win over Willapa Valley on March 7.  Nick Watkins shot 12 of 19 from the floor and had five 3's to pour in 35 points.  Nico Morales scored 17 points while Nick Henning and Dan Rigsby added 9 each.  The Dragons finished the season with a 23-5 record.  See a Photo Gallery by Bob Jones and a gallery of Additional Photos of that game, which was the final game for seniors Dan Rigsby and Liam Elsensohn.

The Dragons opened the tournament at the Spokane Arena on March 5 with a quarterfinal 55-53 victory over White Swan.  Nico and Nick each scored 15 points as the Dragons held off a late charge by the Cougars.  See a Photo Gallery of that game.  Then in the semifinals, SGS needed a win over Brewster to return to the State championship game for the third straight year.  Leading at halftime, the Dragons' defense couldn't stop the Bears in the third quarter, but SGS clawed back to trail 58-57 with 15 seconds remaining in the game.  After a key rebound, Brewster made two free throws for the 60-57 final score.  "You gotta block out," noted coach Ryan Peplinski in the Spokesman-Review's Article on the game. "Other than that I thought we played a great game.  The kids showed a lot of heart."  See a Photo Gallery of the game.

The girls' varsity team reached the State 2B Tournament's elimination round on March 4, but fell to Tri-Cities Prep 56-47 to end their season with a 21-6 record.  "We just couldn't get a shot to fall in the second half," lamented coach Cliff Berdar in the S-R article on the game.  The Dragons pulled within four points with four minutes left in the game, but couldn't get any closer.  Cambrie Rickard led the team with 16 points, while Annika Bergquist grabbed 13 rebounds to go with her 14 points.  See a Photo Gallery and Video Highlights of the final game for seniors Lydia Bergquist, Grace Harrill, Sydney Lennemann, and Kathryn Moon.
