Baseball Season Ends with Awards

May 09, 2017

Saint George's baseball team travelled to distant Asotin for a pair of District 7 loser-out games on Tuesday, May 2.  Dylan Sweeney homered in the first game, and the Dragons advanced with a 9-2 win over Tekoa-Rosalia.  But in the second game, the Asotin Panthers' Devin Fry pitched a complete game five-hitter and the Dragons were eliminated 9-1 from district play.  The Dragons finished their season 10-6, and that was without ever playing a home game due to the high water levels in their field this spring.

At the District Awards presentations on May 8, Mike Wootton was named Northeast 2B North League Co-Coach of the Year, Alex Watkins was named 1st Team, and Zach Steele earned the North League MVP Award.  The honors were voted on by all of the coaches in the District based on stats that were submitted and individual play versus the opposing team.  Both Zach and Alex were team captains starting pitchers this year.  Alex led the team with a 1.7 ERA (earned run average) against opposing batters, while Zach led the team in RBIs (runs batted in) and ended the year with a .571 batting average.  Congratulations, Dragons!
