SGS Ceramics Installation Wins International "Ocean Awareness" Award

The ceramic wave installation that Jennifer Davenport's class made last year was chosen as a winner in the 2020 Ocean Awareness Contest.  Their artwork won the Making Waves Award in the 2020 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest Art Category.  "The Making Waves Award recognizes young environmental leaders who creatively raised awareness for ocean conservation and climate action in their communities," says Linda Cabot, founder and president of Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs.  "Your impressive submission stood out from the more than 5,300 entries we received from around the world."

The Making Waves Award brings with it a $500 total cash scholarship, which amounts to $62.50 going to each of the students who helped create the installation: Norma Broderick, Krystal Huang, Angelina Jiang, Anna Klim, Sonja Klim, Fair Niven, Pearl Wenzel, and Selina Yang.

“Our installation was made up of a bunch of unique waves with different colors, curves, and shapes; each individual shape coming together to create a larger picture,” says Jennifer.  When the installation was displayed in the SGS Art Gallery in early 2020, students, faculty, and parents were invited to take small pieces (rain-drop shaped ceramic pushpins) of the installation home to share the art and its message with their family, friends, and the larger community.

“We wanted our installation to remind people of how beautiful the ocean is, how important it is to the world, the very real possibility we could lose it, and the necessity of taking action to save it.”
