Girls' Golf Team Finishes 2nd in State
Braving 95 degree heat and then wild winds, the SGS girls' golf team of Taylor Mitchell and Maddy Christiansen still managed to make great shots at the 1B/2B/1A State Tournament on May 23-24. Taylor finished 9th overall, shooting 173 over the two days at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland. Maddy was 15th overall, with both playing well on a course featuring lots of sage brush, awkward shots and pressure. Together they finished 4.5 points behind South Whidbey HS; just a swing of two shots would have earned the Dragons their second State Title in four years. "A great accomplishment when you consider that we combined with the 1As this year," says coach Brad Kirsch, "so the field was much stronger than years past." The girls also earned the District Title earlier in May against 1B/2B/1A schools on the strength of Maddy finishing 2nd overall and Taylor 5th. Maddy was named League Player of the Year and Taylor was an All-League selection. A great pair of tournaments and a great season for girls' golf!
