SGS Debate Teams Score at Nationals

September 05, 2017

Last February, after a hard-fought district tournament, Saint George’s qualified two policy debate teams -— sophomores Charlie Darnall & Nik Chaudhry and sophomore/junior combo-team Grace Generous & Kylie Vera —- to the National Forensic League Tournament, located in Birmingham, Alabama.  "The tournament is easily the largest in the country, hosting every competitive policy debate team from New York City to Guam," said SGS debate coach Chad Rigsby.  By qualifying, these SGS policy debaters automatically ranked among the top 180 teams in the country.  Conservatively, over 1,000 teams competed for entry into the tournament.

Over the summer, Darnall & Chaudhry and Generous & Vera all competed in Birmingham, and managed one of Saint George’s finest showings ever at the national tournament.  Generous & Vera, in particular, showcased their considerable ability as competitors, reaching late elimination rounds.  By the close of the tournament, Generous & Vera ranked in the top 30 teams in the country!  "This marks one of the better national tournament appearances in the long history of policy debate in Spokane," said coach Rigsby.  Go Dragons!
