February 20, 2018

Saint George's Middle School placed 1st at the Spokane Regional Math Counts competition for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders, on February 10 at Gonzaga University. Over 30 students participated from schools around the Spokane area including Northwood Middle School and Libby Odyssey.

The nine students representing Saint George’s included:
8th graders: Ethan Wu, Tariq Ravasia, Stella Brown;
7th graders: Gabe Gustafson, Paul Poole, John Nowland;
6th graders: Steel Lindauer, Sam Morris, and Kara Chiang.

Individual awards were given to Stella Brown who placed 4th overall, Tariq Ravasia who placed 2nd, and Kara Chiang who placed 1st.  Kara’s achievement was something special to many people including her math teacher, Shane Kangas.  He says that in his 15 years of teaching, "this was the first time a 6th grader had been awarded 1st place in this regional competition."

Tariq Ravasia, Stella Brown, Ethan Wu, and Kara Chiang will represent SGS at the State Math Counts competition on March 10 at the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA.  Students will be competing against one another to represent Washington State at the national Math Counts championships.
