SGS Debate Teams Take 2nd & 4th at State

March 19, 2018

For the second year in a row, Saint George’s policy debaters closed out one entire semifinal round of the Final Four at the State Debate Tournament.  Kylie Vera (senior) & Grace Generous (junior) were the tournament’s top seed, and advanced without debating over juniors Charlie Darnall and Nik Chaudhry.  The tournament marked the second time in two years that the teams have met in the semifinal round of the State Tournament.

"The teams’ meeting in the semifinals marked a rare piece of bad luck, but it’s also a testament to these debaters’ considerable ability and team spirit," says debate coach Chad Rigsby.  These two Saint George’s teams were Washington state’s only repeat contenders in the Final Four, and except for some tough losses in the Championships, the foursome essentially dominated the WIAA State Debate Tournament from 2016-2018.  Congratulations, also, to Nik Chaudhry, who was the tournament’s third overall speaker on points.  "Chaudhry, Darnall, and Generous will all have another shot at the title in 2019," says Rigsby, "along with an opportunity to go down in history as some of Washington State’s most decorated State Tournament debaters."
