Lower School News

The annual Lower School Holiday Concert filled Founders Theater with music, dancing, family floats and holiday cheer!  See a Photo Gallery of the show, along with videos of the 4th Grade's Percussion number and the Lower School Choir singing "Up on the Housetop" with some unique SGS lyrics.  You can still order your own DVD of the full evening; mail in the Order Form on the website directly to KDK One.  Happy Holidays!

The Coding and Maker Club is open to students in grades 3-8 who are interested in learning how to program video games, use a vinyl cutter to make stickers, and create digital compositing with a green screen.  Taught by Travis Cullitan, Director of Technology, the Coding and Maker Club begins Thursday, Jan. 4, and will run weekly through March 29.  This club is now full..

The 5th graders paired up to construct bridges with up to 1000 toothpicks and glue.  Then on Dec. 1, 2017 they tested how much weight their bridges could hold using half-pound bags of sand.  See a Photo Gallery and a Video of the Bridges Breaking (and sometimes exploding!), including the winning span that held 17.5 lbs! 

On Friday, Dec. 1, three seniors helped the 4th graders use GPS devices to search for “geocaches”, hidden cans with math clues, in the woods above campus.  See a Photo Gallery of them getting their bearings and heading up into the woods to find their targets...

The Kindergarten class has learned all about the Pilgrims who came to America on the Mayflower, including the games their children played.  Then on Monday, Nov. 20, they helped prepare a Thanksgiving Feast and invited their "Indian Buddies" who had attended Kindergarten at Saint George's 12 years ago!  See photo galleries of their Pilgrim Games and the annual Thanksgiving Feast...

The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders presented their research projects to the rest of the Lower School at Science Fair Day on Tuesday, Nov. 21.  See photo galleries of the 3rd Grade Projects, the 4th Grade Research on invasive species, and the 5th Grade Bridges made of toothpicks and the famous spans that they studied...

To celebrate Veterans' Day, the Nov. 16 Lower School Assembly featured a reading of the book "The White Table" by librarian Dianne Douthitt and a rousing, flag-waving performance of John Phillip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever".  See a Video of the Patriotic March by the entire Lower School...

Congratulations to the SGS Lower School cross-country runners who participated in the All-City meet last week.  See their names and placements...

The Lower School cross country team hosted a meet on the SGS campus on Friday afternoon, Oct. 13.  What started as a rainy day cleared up for the runners from a variety of local schools.  See a Photo Gallery of several of the races that afternoon...
